Early ACC Rankings

#1 North Carolina (8-0)
Big Wins- Beat BYU 73-63, @Ohio State 66-55, @Kentucky 86-77
Bad Games- None
Team Strengths- Interior Scoring, Coaching, Lead Guard Play, Full Court Defense, Rebounding, Versatile
Team Weaknesses- Perimeter Shooting, Turnover Prone.
The Tar Heels haven’t had their floor general for much of the season but they’ve still been able to win all of their games thanks to the combination of Hansbrough inside and Ellington outside.  Hansbrough is one of the most dominant low post threats in the game today.  His ability to score inside as well as draw contact and make his free throws makes him one of the most effective scorers in the country.  The key for UNC though has been the emergence of Ellington as a legit and consistent perimeter scoring threat.  Once this team gets Lawson back running the point and dictating tempos UNC will be even more dangerous.
The team defense looks good in the both the half court and full court settings and this is a team that will outrebound just about everyone they play this year.  The only real weakness this team has right now is perimeter shooting.  Ellington and Green have shown the ability to hit from the outside but neither are true outside shooting threats.

#2 Duke (8-0)
Big Wins- Beat Illinois 79-66, #11 Marquette 77-73 and #20 Wisconsin 82-58
Bad Games- None
Team Strengths- Perimeter Shooting, Ball Handling, Guard Depth, Coaching, Full Court Defense, Athleticism
Team Weaknesses- Interior Scoring, Interior Defense, Turnover Prone
Thus far this Duke team has been able to surprise and impress this year.  However, Duke started the year hot last year as well.  This is a much different Duke team though.  They’re a more attacking team that loves to get out and run and can shoot from the perimeter as well as any team in the ACC.  Gerald Henderson has stepped up and could end up emerging as the teams go to scorer.  With Paulus, Nelson, Henderson, Singler, Scheyer, Smith and King, Duke has a ton of perimeter scorers, shooters, ball handlers and headsy players.
The problem with Duke is on the inside.  It’s going to be a struggle with Thomas and Zoubek inside if Duke is unable to create match-up problems with their guards and get out and run on teams.

#3 Clemson (8-0)
Big Wins- @Mississippi State 74-72, Purdue 61-58, South Carolina 85-74
Bad Games- None
Team Strengths- Athleticism, Experience, Full Court Defense, Perimeter Shooting.
Team Weaknesses- Free Throw Shooting, Ball Handling, Turnover Prone.
If there is any team in the ACC that is capable of playing and hanging with Duke and North Carolina it’s Clemson.  They have the experience and the athletes to be a top tier team in the ACC.  Clemson is for real this year.  Cliff Hammonds is one of the most underrated players in the country.  He’s a do it all senior guard that just simply gets the job done game in and game out.  With Mays and Booker on the interior Clemson has what could be the best front court duo in the ACC.  Mays is a terrific athlete that creates havoc all over the court and Booker is a tremendous interior rebounder and shot blocker who can score with his back to the basket.  Clemson also has the ability to shoot the ball from the outside with Oglesby, Rivers and Hammonds.
Where Clemson is struggles most is in the ball handling department.  They struggle taking care of the basketball and they currently have a freshman running their offense in Stitt who is shooting under 40% from the field and has more turnovers than assists.  That’s not going to cut it against the elite teams in the country.  Nor is their putrid free throw shooting.

#4 Miami (8-0)
Big Wins-  Beat VCU 69-63, Providence 64-58 and St.Johns 66-47
Bad Games- Barely Beat Morgan State 55-51
Team Strengths- Half Court Defense, Rebounding, Perimeter Shooting, Depth, Physical Team, Experience.
Team Weaknesses- Full Court Offense, Ball Handling, Lead Guard Play, Lack Athleticism.
Miami is off to a great and somewhat surprising start this season.  They returned a good amount of talent from last years team but no one was quite sure how their returning talent would mesh with the incoming talent.  Thus far it’s meshed well.  Miami is currently ranked #1 in the RPI.
They’re a great half court defensive team because of their interior shot blockers and man to man defense on the perimeter.  They don’t handle the basketball ball very well though and if teams can force them into a full court game they will struggle.  This is a tempo team that needs to play at a slow pace, pound the ball inside and hit shots from the outside.  It’s a not a creative team because they don’t like to get out and run and they don’t have very good ball handlers or playmakers.  It should be interesting to see if Miami can stay where they are in my rankings once ACC play starts.  The middle of the ACC is very balanced.

#5 Virginia (7-2)
Big Wins- Beat #17 Arizona 75-72 on the road
Bad Games- Blown out by Seton Hall 60-74
Team Strengths- Lead Guard Play, Rebounding, Half Court Defense, Perimeter Shooting.
Team Weaknesses- Interior Scoring, Turnover Prone, Full Court Offense.
Virginia is a very perimeter oriented offensive team.  Their top five scorers are perimeter players.  They’re led by Singletary who is as good of a go to scorer as you will find in the country.  His 19 points, 4 boards and 7 assists are impressive but his 5 turnovers and 39% shooting are not.  His strength is his ability to get into the lane, create shots for teammates and get to the foul line where he is automatic.  Joseph and Diane are both reliable outside shooters but neither is good at creating their own shot and rely heavily on Singletary.  In fact the entire roster relies on Singletary which is too much for one player.  This is not a good offensive team.
However, they are a good rebounding team and they play very disciplined half court defense.  They’re not a team that is going to get out and run even though they’re a very perimeter oriented team.  They’re more accustomed to a slug it out type of game where they outrebound and outhustle their opponents.

#6 Boston College (7-0)
Big Wins- Beat Maryland 81-78
Bad Games- None
Team Strengths- Lead Guard Play, Ball Handling, Coaching, Half Court Offense, Interior Defense.
Team Weaknesses- Youth, Full Court Offense, Rebounding.
Boston College is doing what Boston College does.  They’re winning and flying under the radar once again this year.  They’re led by one of the best guards in the country in Tyrese Rice.  Rice is arguably the best guard in the ACC and if you compare his numbers to Singletarys(UVA) he’s having a better season.  He’s not relied on as heavily but he’s been more effective.  Boston College is another team that does not like to get out and run and very much prefer to play a slower game in the half court setting.  They have good ball handlers and passers in Rice and Paris that are good at getting other players open for shots.  They have players in Spears, Rice, Sanders and Raji who are capable of scoring the basketball at a consistent rate as well.
Boston College has struggled shooting from the outside though.  Rice and Roche need to be more consistent from the outside because this is not a team that will dominate inside or score in transition so they need perimeter shooting.  Defensively they have one of the finest shot blockers in the country Tyrelle Blair but their perimeter defense is shaky and can be exploited.  Rebounding may become a concern later on as well because they’re not an overly big or athletic team.  Last but not least this is a very young and inexperienced team outside of Rice.

#7 Florida State (8-2)
Big Wins- Beat UAB 78-70, Beat #25 Florida 65-61 on the road, Beat Minesota 75-61
Bad Games- Lost to Clev St. 66-69, Lost to South Florida 67-68 on the road
Team Strengths- Perimeter Scoring, Guard Play, General Defense, Experience.
Team Weaknesses- Interior Scoring, Very Turnover Prone, Rebounding, Lack Offensive Balance
Thus far Florida State has been an inconsistent team this year.  They’ve beaten Florida @ Florida but they’ve lost to Cleveland State and South Florida.  Senior guard Isaiah Swann has been extremely good this year.  He’s been more reliable in his senior season then he ever was his first three years.  His offense and Florida State’s defense have been this teams biggest strengths this year.
Four of Florida’s state’s best five players are under 6 foot 2 and that means that Florida State has very little offensive balance.  This team just does not get enough offense on the interior in order for them to be able to score the basketball on a consistent level.  In order for this team to get an NCAA birth they’re going to have to rely very heavily on their guards and their defense.  Those are two things that are key in order to winning basketball games in the ACC but I doubt Florida State will have enough of those two things to get over the hump this year.

#8 Maryland (6-4)
Big Wins- Beat Illinois 69-61
Bad Games- Barely Beat N.Eastern 74-72.
Team Strengths- General Defense, Lead Guard Play, Playmakers.
Team Weaknesses- Turnover Prone, Perimeter Shooting, Half Court Offense, Depth.
It’s been an ugly season for Maryland.  They’re playing very bad offensively.  They’re turnover the ball over, shooting very poorly from the outside and they’re not turning teams over as much as they used to defensively.  With Vasquez and Hayes in the back court Maryland has two capable playmakers but without consistent interior scoring or perimeter shooting they will continue to struggle scoring the basketball.
Maryland’s half court defense has been good thus far though but they’re not pressuring the basketball and forcing turnovers as much as they used to.  Gist is one of the better shot blockers in the country and his ability to create problems on the defensive end is key for Maryland’s success.  This is not a good Maryland team right now.  They have some talented players in Gist, Vasquez and Hayes but they’re not a terribly deep team and they may have too many glarying weaknesses to get back into the NCAA Tournament this year.

#9 North Carolina State (4-3)
Big Wins- Beat #20 Villanova 69-68
Bad Games- Lost to New Orleans 63-65, Blown out by Michigan State 58-81 and lost to ECU 69-75 on the road.
Team Strengths- Interior Scoring, Size, Decent Half Court Defense.
Team Weaknesses- Ball Handling, Toughness, Lead Guard Play, Rebounding, Full Court Offense, Perimeter Shooting.
Where does one start with this team?  They’re a mess right now and they’ve been easily the most dissapointing team in the ACC.  They have very little team speed and not enough ball handlers or playmakers.  Their strength is their size but they lack athleticism and toughness.  They don’t rebound well and they don’t shoot well from the outside.  They can’t get out and run against teams and are forced to slow games down and try scoring inside, however, both Costner and McCauley are playing out of place and neither look comfortable offensively.  Right now the only bright spot on the team has been freshman big man J.J. Hickson.  He’s the real deal but he’s a freshman and is far from good enough to carry this teams lofty preseason expectations on his back.

#10 Georgia Tech (4-4)
Big Wins- Beat Notre Dame 70-69, Barely lost to Indiana 79-83 on the road
Bad Games- Lost to NC Greensboro 74-83, Lost to Winthrop 73-79 on the road
Team Strengths- Perimeter Shooting, Experience, Interior Scoring.
Team Weaknesses- General Defense, Rebounding, Turnover Prone, Lead Guard Play, Full Court Offense
Georgia Tech has a lot of talent and they’ve been able to score the basketball because they can score in a variety of ways in the half court setting.  Clinch and Morrow give GT perimeter scoring and outside shooting while Smith, Peacock, Aminu and Lawal give them some interior offensive punch.  The problem with Georgia Tech is their arratic lead guard play and overall defense.  They turn the ball over too much and are by far and away the worst defensive team in the ACC in just about every possible category.

#11 Virginia Tech (5-3)
#12 Wake Forest (5-3)

ACC Tournament Preview

Opening round breakdown and predictions

Clemson vs. Florida State

Who will win?  Clemson

Why?  Clemson won the first two meetings this year and they won quite comfortably the second time around.  Florida State is not a very good defensive team and Clemson is one of the better offensive teams in the ACC.  Will Florida State be able to defend Clemson?  Probably not.
However, Florida State is a fairly solid offensive as well and they have argaubly the best player in the ACC in Al Thorton.  Thorton is the hardest player in the ACC to match-up with and he’ll likely get his 20 points against Clemson.  He’ll need to get help though and hopefully guard Toney Douglas will be ready to play.  Douglas is coming off an injury but is expected to be in the lineup for tomorrows game.
Florida State is a very small team that relies on spreading the court and shooting from the perimeter.  Clemson has the athletes on the perimeter to match-up with Florida State’s guard though and they should be able to cover Florida State defensively much better than Florida State can cover Clemson defensively.  That’s more of a knock of Florida State’s defense as opposed to their offense.  Playing good team defense has been a problem for Florida State all year.
Neither one of these teams are great rebounding teams but Clemson does have more size and strength up front.  As far as tempo goes neither one of these teams is afraid to get out and run but if this does turn into a track meet it’s probably an advantage to Clemson because they’re a better transition team and are better at forcing turnovers defensively.
Unless Florida State get’s hot from the outside they’ll likely need Thorton to put up 30 plus points in order to knock off Clemson tomorrow.  It’s not that Clemson is that much better than Florida State but it’s more so the fact that Clemson can match-up with Florida State’s guards defensively but Florida State cannot match-up with Clemson on the interior in anyway shape or form.

Clemson- 73
Florida State- 67

Miami vs. Maryland

Who wins?  Maryland
Why?  Because Maryland is simply much better and they’re playing very good basketball currently.  Earlier in the year these two teams played and Miami beat Maryland at Maryland but that was a much different Maryland basketball team.  Miami won that game while shooting 31% from the field and turned the ball over 15 times to only 7 assists.  However, Maryland shot 22% from the field and were severely outrebounded by Miami.
The only real edge Miami appears to have in this game is that the game is going to be played in their home state.  Maryland is a freakishly athletic team that should be more than capable of shutting down Miami’s offense.  The Canes are not a very efficient offensive team, do not have a lot of playmakers and have no interior offense.  They rely very heavily on guards Jack McClinton, Anthony Harris and Denis Clemente to hit shots from the outside and that’s just not gonna be enough against this Maryland team.  Not this time around.
That’s because this Maryland team is playing very good and very crisp offense and they not will shoot 22% from the floor tomorrow.  They’re getting excellent guard play from a pair of freshmen point guards in Vasquez and Hayes.  Both of these guards are no longer freshmen and with the way they’re running the offense they should be able to generate enough offense to get by a very pour all around team in Miami.
Where Maryland can tend to struggle is with turnovers and rebounding.  Miami is not a team that likes to pressure the basketball though and they have sure enough ball handlers to handle Maryland’s pressure defense so this game will likely not be played at a frentic pace.  However, with the way Maryland’s upperclassmen in Strawberry, Jones, Gist and Ibekwe are playing offensively they should be able to outscore Miami in a halfcourt game if needed because they have much more length, experience, skill and athleticism than that of Miami.
The only real chance Miami has of winning this game is if they pound the offensive glass, take good care of the basketball and play inspired defense.  All in all Miami is not a very good team but they have proven that they can beat Maryland because they do take good care of the basketball and they do rebound the basketball but this Maryland team is playing great and this Miami team is not.  Maryland wins.

Maryland- 74
Miami- 59

North Carolina State vs. Duke

Who will win?  Duke
Why?  Let’s face it, folks, this was the perfect draw for Duke.  It’s well known that this Duke team struggles against athletic teams that can get them to turn the ball over and beat them off the dribble defensively.  This NCST team is not that athletic, they don’t play good defense, they don’t have depth, they’re shaky with the basketball and they don’t like to pressure the basketball.  These are all areas that teams tend to use to try and exploit Duke.
What NCST does do well is play offense in the half court setting.  Unfortunetly, their style of offense plays right in line with Duke’s style of defense.  Duke is a very solid and smart man to man defense team along as they’re not playing against a superior team in terms of quickness and athleticism and this NCST team is not superior in those departments.  In other words, Duke should be able to defend NCST but will NCST be able to defend Duke?  Probably not since they have a hard time to defending just about everyone.
This is not a great Duke team but they’re good enough to beat NCST.  They’re a better defensive team by a long shot, they’re a much better rebounding team and they have the type of balance offensively in terms of inside and outside scoring to really punish this NCST team.  Expect Duke to pressure NCST and try and force this game into a more uptempo type of game.  NCST does not have a true point guard and when teams are able to get them out of their half court sets they’re extremely vulnerable because they’re not deep enough or athletic enough to play at a fast pace.

Duke- 78
North Carolina State- 65

Georgia Tech vs. Wake Forest

Who wins?  Georgia Tech
Why?  Because Javaris Crittenton plays great against teams that do not pressure the basketball.  Expect Crittenton to have career day against Wake Forest.  Thus far this year against Wake he’s averaged 15 points and 8 assists but only 3 turnovers against Wake and he’s playing as good as he’s played all year right now.  Georgia Tech should look to pressure Wake Forest and take center Kyle Visser out of the game because he’s Wake Forests only consistent scorer.  Georgia Tech is a very good transition basketball team and Wake Forest is a very turnover prone basketball team that likes to play at a slower pace.  However, when you can’t take care of the basketball it’s hard to play at your own pace and that is going to be Skip Prossers main focus heading into this game.  How to take care of the basketball.
Defensively, both of these teams have been extremely pour this year.  In fact both of these teams rank right near the bottom off the ACC defensively.  Both teams are more offensive minded but one team is much better offensively and that’s Georgia Tech.  Tech has the better athletes and the better overall talent.  The only real advantage Wake Forest has is inside with Kyle Viser.  In both games against Tech, Visser more or less had his way with the Tech big men.  He’ll need to play outstanding once again against Georgia Tech but unless Wake Forest finds some way to play defense and take care of the basketball they likely be packing their bags.

Georgia Tech- 84
Wake Forest- 71

SF-Reyshawn Terry 6′8 215 SR
SG-Wayne Ellington 6′4 200 FR
PG-Tywon Lawson 5′11 185 FR

Team Breakdown
UNC picked up three marquee victories over Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio State before heading into ACC play.  The highly regarded and very talented young freshmen have gelled very well with the returning players from last year.  Three freshmen are now starting and are playing very key roles.  That can be looked upon as a good thing and a bad thing.  It’s a good thing because they’re very talented and they’re playing very good basketball.  It’s a bad thing though because it means that UNC is relying heavily on young and unproven players.
Offensively, this is one of the highest scoring teams in the country and that’s not likely to change once ACC play starts.  This team can score as well as any team in the country.  With Hansbrough(18.1ppg) and Wright(15.7ppg) on the interior UNC has two of the most talented post players in the country.  Both can score with their back-to-the-basket and they give UNC good balance offensively.  On the perimeter UNC has a lot of options and very good depth.  Wayne Ellington(12.9ppg) has stepped up as the teams main perimeter scoring threat while fellow freshman Tywon Lawson(5.7apg) has become the teams quarterback and main playmaker.  Both are very talented players but at the same time both are very young and untested in ACC play.
This teams ability to score inside and outside is very difficult for teams to match-up with.  However, they also can score in transition as well.  UNC loves to push to the tempo and try and force turnvoers on defense.  In terms of rebounding the basketball this team is as good as it gets as well.  UNC’s half court defense has been fairly solid but not as great as it could be though.  Brandan Wright gives UNC an athletic shot blocker down low while their perimeter players love to pressure the basketball and force turnvovers.
This is one of the best all around teams in the country with very few weaknesses.  They can score the basketball and defend the basketball at any tempo and against any style.  They can also score inside and outside and have good ball handlers and rebounders.  What’s not to like, right?  They’re young and still fairly unproven as a unit.  That’s about the only knock you can give this UNC team right now and that’s not really much of a knock at all.

SG-Jon Scheyer 6′4 185 FR
PG-Greg Paulus 6′2 190 SO

Team Breakdown
Duke has beaten four solid competitors in Air Force, Indiana, Georgetown and Gonzaga with their only loss coming at the hands of Marquette.  While none of their wins really stand out they have played against a consistently solid schedule all year and have to had to really fight for a lot of their wins. Junior guard DeMarcus Nelson(14.5ppg) has stepped up his game and has become a viable go to scorer from the perimeter.  Sophomore big man Josh McRoberts(12.6ppg) is finally starting to play like the preseason All-American he was pegged to be going into this season.  He’s an absolute match-up nightmare for opposing teams because of his ability to play inside and outside as well as the pass and handle the basketball.
Even though this team is 13-1 and ranked 3rd in the RPI they have had their fair share of struggles this year.  Most of their struggles have come at the offensive end of the court.  Sophomore lead guard Greg Paulus(3.7apg) has struggled taking care of the basketball, creating offense and playing defense.  Duke has ball handling issues and they have struggled taking care of the basketball as a team.  They’ve also struggled genetrating offense within the half court setting.  This team does not have a lot of playmakers.  In fact their leading assist is man is Josh McRoberts(4.2apg).
For Duke to continue to win basketball games they’ll need players like Nelson, Paulus and Scheyer(10.6ppg) to continue to consistently knock down shots from the outside because with Brian Zoubek(5.9ppg) and McRoberts on the interior that should give Duke the inside-outside game to effectively score in the half court setting.  Ball handling and lack of playmaking abilities in their back court will still likely be an issue all year though.
Defensively and on the boards this Duke team is flat out getting it done.  Duke typically likes to pressure the basketball and get out and run in transition but without the athleticism and playmaking in their back court they’ve had to slow games down and eek out victories with stifling half court defense.  McRoberts has become a very good interior shot blocker(2.7blk) and players like David McClure(4.9ppg), Lance Thomas(5.7ppg), Gerald Henderson(5.5ppg) and DeMarcus Nelson have given them toughness and athleticism on the defensive end as well.
This Duke team is a very unique and a different type of Duke team that we’re not used to seeing but that’s not a bad thing.  They’re playing as good of defense as any team in the country and they’re rebounding the basketball and doing all of the little things that it takes to win basketball games.  Offensively, they’re not as good as a team like UNC because they just don’t have the players to generate enough offense, however, they do have offensively balance, a go to scorer in DeMarcus Nelson and a potential breakout star in Josh McRoberts to go along with one of the best half court defenses in the country.

PG-Vernon Hamilton 6′0 190 SR- 11.0ppg 4.2apg 47%FG

Team Breakdown
Clemson may not be playing against an elite schedule but they are 14-0 and they have beaten three SEC teams as well as a pretty solid Old Dominion team.  James Mays(12.4ppg) and Trevor Booker(10.4ppg) give Clemson two athletic low post players that can get out and run in transition, block shots, rebound and finish on the interior.  Neither is a true back to the basket post scorer though.  All of Clemson’s starting perimeter players are capable of leading the team in scoring in any given game.  Hamilton(4.2apg) is lone the starting senior who has become a much better lead guard this year because he’s finally playing under control and looking to pass.  Hammonds(10.2ppg) is a true do it all perimeter player who leads by example and defends at a high level.  That leaves us with Clemson’s leading scorer in K.C. Rivers(14.5ppg) who gives Clemson size, shooting and scoring on the perimeter.
This is a very physical and athletic team that likes to push the tempo because of their speed but are most effective at beating up teams on the boards with their length and athleticism.  Clemson has very balanced scoring with five players averaging double figures in points.  They have slashing guards and wing players who can pass the basketball and get into the lane and they have good interior finishers who can play above the rim.
Defensively, they’re special because they can defend just about any type of team.  They can defend teams with size as well as teams with speed.  Last year Clemson was a very effective full court defense team that tried to pressure the basketball and play at a fastbreak pace all the time.  This year though they don’t rely near as much on forcing turnovers because they have the size and athleticism in their front court to defend bigger teams.
Perimeter shooting could prove to be a weakness of this team.  They don’t have a lot of consistent outside shooters outisde of Rivers and they’re guards do tend to turn the ball over a little too much as well.  The fact of the matter though is that this team still really hasn’t really been tested against a true top 25 caliber team but they’re beating the teams on their schedule and that’s really all that matters right now.

#4 Maryland 13-2 (0-1)
My Top 25- #22
RPI- #15

-Michigan State 62-60
-Winthrop 71-60
-Illinois 72-66 on the road

Starting Lineup
C-Ekene Ibekwe 6′9 220 SR
PF-James Gist 6′8 215 JR
SF-D.J. Strawberry 6′5 205 SR
SG-Mike Jones 6′5 200 SR
PG-Greivis Vasquez 6′4 185 FR

Team Breakdown
Maryland hasn’t beaten anyone this year that is currently ranked in the top 25, however, they do have three quality victories over Michigan State, Illinois and Winthrop.  They started off ACC play with a loss at Boston College though.  This is arguably the most experienced and veteran team in the ACC with three senior starters.  D.J. Strawberry(15.9ppg), Mike Jones(13.8ppg) and Ekene Ibekwe(10.9ppg) are all seniors and they give Maryland a good amount of experience that could prove to be vital once ACC gets fully underway.
Even though this is an experienced team they are young at the point guard position with two freshmen in Greivis Vasquez(4.1apg) and Eric Hayes(4.3apg).  Hayes started the year out at the point but Vasquez has moved into the starting rotation because he gives MD more athleticism, size and all around ability.  With Hayes and Vasquez running the point this Maryland team finally has enough players makers to effectively generate offense and run the team within the half court setting.  Both have done a good job of taking care of the basketball but they are both freshmen and as a whole this is still a very turnover prone Maryland team.
Where this team has been most successful though is on the defensive end.  They start three athletic perimeter players who are all above 6′4 and have two very athletic shot blockers on the interior in Ibekwe(3.1blk) and Gist(2.5blk).  Statistically, Maryland is playing better defense than just about any team in the country according Kenpom’s defensive ratings.  They love to use their press and force turnovers as well and they can get away with being overaggressive on the perimeter because of their shotblockers in the middle.
This Maryland team is good enough to reach the NCAA Tournament this year and they’re experienced and athletic enough to make a decent run come March.  This team has the scorers, the athletes, the shooters, the playmakers and the complete defense to compete with any team in the ACC.  However, they are undersized, tend to struggle rebounding the basketball and are a very turnover prone team.

#5 Georgia Tech 10-3 (0-1)
My Top 25- Honorable mention

SF-Thaddeus Young 6′8 215 FR
SG-Lewis Clinch 6′2 195 SO
PG-Javaris Crittenton 6′5 195 FR

Team Breakdown
The Yellow Jackets have been rather inconsistent all season but that was to be expected from a team that started out the year with three freshmen in their starting rotation.  They have three good victories over Memphis, Purdue and Georgia but also stumbled out of the gates in their ACC opener against lowly Miami and looked overwelmed defensively against Vanderbilt.  However, this is a very talented team with a lot of ability and if they can gel enough together to find their own identity this will be a very dangerous team come March.
In terms of balance offensively this team is as good as it gets in the ACC.  They have proven post players in Ra’Sean Dickey(8.1ppg) and Jeremis Smith(9.8ppg) to go along with good perimter scorers in Thaddeus Young(14.5ppg), Lewis Clinch(14.2ppg) and Javaris Crittention(13.3ppg).  Anytime you have a team that can score inside and outside like this GT team does you have the ability to hang out just about any team in the country.
Where this team has issues is on defense as well as at the point guard position.  Defensively, GT has the athletes and size to be an effective defensive team but they’ve been inconsisent all year defensively and have allowed opponents to shoot high percentages from the field against them way too much.  This team also lacks ball handling at the point guard postition.  Even though Crittention(5.8apg) is a great playmaker and scoring threat he is not a true point guard and turns the ball over roughly four times a game.  That’s way too much.
Both Young and Crittention are NBA caliber talents and they have enough experience returning in Anthony Morrow, Mario West, Ra’Sean Dickery and Jeremis Smith to make a serious run in the ACC this year.  Offensively, this team is sound because they have good outside shooters, interior scorers and athletes all over the court.  They’ll need to find their way defensively though and their ball handling issues will likely be a problem all year as well.

#6 Florida State 12-2 (0-0)

Starting Lineup
C-Uche Echefu 6′9 230 SO
PF-Al Thorton 6′7 210 SR
SF-Jason Rich 6′3 185 SR
SG-Isaiah Swann 6′1 200 SR
PG-Toney Douglas 6′1 185 SO

Team Breakdown
Beating the Florida Gators was a huge victory for FSU and the kind of non confrence victory this team needed in order to punch it’s ticket come March.  However, their most impressive victory of the year may have been their 30 point drubbing over an upstart and improved Providence team.  This is a very smallish FSU team that relies on their team speed to force turnovers and create match-up problems offensively.  Al Thorton(16.1ppg) is an absolute match-up nightmare for most teams because he has the ability to create offense from the perimeter and he forces teams to go with a smaller lineup.  No true PF can effectively defend Thorton on the perimeter.
Offensively, this team relies a lot on perimter shooting and transition buckets.  They don’t have any sort of post presence or interior finishers and that makes them a very unbalanced offenisve team.  They start three guards in Toney Douglas(14.0ppg), Jason Rich(10.6ppg) and Isaiah Swann(8.1ppg) and try to push the tempo and make it a full court game as much as possible.  When this cannot effectively force turnovers they tend to rely too heavily on Thorton and Douglas to generate offense and do not play very well as a team because they stand around and watch those two operate one on one.  It’s not the most effective or efficient offense.
Anytime you have a smallish team like FSU does you will likely struggle defensively in the half court setting as well as on the boards and that has certainly been the case with FSU this year.  They typically get out muscled on the interior and are forced to try and pressure defensively which in turn has resulted in them turnover the ball over a ton as well.
This team is all about match-ups.  They match-up well with some teams but when they face a team that has good guards and good ball handlers as well as an athletic defender to put on Thorton they tend to struggle.  FSU will likely be on the bubble once again come March depending on how well teams adjust to their style of play against them.

The second half of the conference will come later tonight…
